In Use

Over the years, I have looked at every one of the G-series keyboards that Logitech has offered. The latest addition to the line is the Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 and it has many of the same features that I am used to seeing on the gaming keyboards from Logitech. One of the coolest features of the keyboard is the LCD that shows details from compatible games. There aren’t that many games on the market that will work with the LCD, but even when you can’t see gaming info you can set the screen to show the time and to show data about the computer like CPU use and more.

One of the cool features of the G510 is that the keyboard offers USB audio. That means you can plug your headphones or a mic into the 3.5mm jacks on the top of the keyboard and get audio with only the USB port. You don't have to plug in extra cables behind your computer. The G510 is backlit, as all of the G keyboards have been so far. The Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 does let the user choose the lighting color with red, blue, green, and yellow options.

The keyboard has a ton of programmable keys with 18 total. Each of the keys has three shift states allowing up to 54 different combinations to be programmed. Those combinations can be simple one key function or you can bind complex macros to the buttons using the Logitech software. The macros can be recorded on the fly as well so you can set them during the game.

The big issue for me with so many programmable keys has always been recalling where I bound each macro on the keyboard. The Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 has anti-ghosting technology that lets you press up to five keys at one time. The keyboard also has the expected game and desktop mode switch that prevents you from accidentally going to your desktop during a game. Logitech also integrates a full range of multimedia keys onto the keyboard.

The keyboard has full size keys with a standard QWERTY layout. That means all the keys are where they are supposed to be and in the correct locations. Typing feel is good and the keys are slightly clicky when pressed. With so many programmable keys on the left side of the keyboard, one of the biggest issues is that the Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 is very long. If you put your keyboard into a smaller keyboard tray, you may have problems with the sheer size of the Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510.

Verdict

Pros

  • Lots of programmable keys
  • Cool LCD screen
  • Color customization for backlight
  • USB audio

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Very long

Conclusion

The Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 is a very nice gaming keyboard that fans of all sorts of PC game types will enjoy. The only downsides here are the price and the length of the G510 but many will be glad to look around those issues.
